Opened in 1928 on Calle Luisa Fernanda, Café Viena was inspired by the charm of Viennese cafés, thanks to Manuel Lence, the owner of Viena Capellanes.
It soon became a meeting place for intellectuals and artists such as the Baroja brothers and Pablo Neruda, and a venue for literary gatherings and political dinners. Famous in those early years for its afternoon tea and freshly roasted coffee, it was
also a meeting place for Madrid’s vegetarians and a cultural landmark in the 1930s.
After weathering some very difficult years following the Civil War, during which it was particularly affected by its proximity to the Cuartel de la Montaña barracks, and following several renovations over the years, Café Viena regained its splendour in the
1980s, without losing its original style.
Today it maintains the same spirit of hospitality and tradition, offering a wide and varied culinary selection — from breakfast to dinner — throughout its opening hours, always faithful to the Viena Capellanes philosophy of combining history, quality and a warm, welcoming atmosphere.
